 Immune Support

How colostrum supports your immune health

  • Colostrum is particularly high in immune boosting antibodies such as IgG, proteins that fight infection and promote health and wellbeing.(1)
  • Colostrum has other immune regulating agents such as Cytokines(2) that are designed to modulate the immune system and turn it up or down in response to immune challenges.
  • Colostrum is one of the richest natural sources of antimicrobial components such as Lactoferrin(2) that are reported to help fight off bacterial and viral infection.
  • Laboratory studies show the antimicrobial effect of colostrum against 19 of the most common human pathogens(3).

Rich in antibodies

Bovine colostrum may help your body combat disease-causing agents by strengthening your immune system. Colostrum milk from cows is enriched with antibodies the proteins that help the immune system battle disease.

Colostrum as nature's first super food, has a biological function to provide immune protection and boost our physiological performance, growth and development.

Many traditional cultures have a long history of humans consuming a portion of the colostrum produced when a dairy animal gives birth(2). It's rich in antibodies, which are proteins your body uses to battle viruses and bacteria. As well as highly nutritious.

Although colostrum is high in macronutrients, vitamins, and minerals, other health benefits are attributed to particular protein compounds such as:

  • Antibodies, also known as immunoglobulins, are proteins produced by your immune system to combat bacteria and viruses. Bovine colostrum is rich in IgA, IgG, and IgM antibodies.
  • Lactoferrin is a protein that helps the body fight diseases, such as those caused by bacteria and viruses(5,6).
  • Insulin-like growth factors 1 and 2, or IGF-1 and IGF-2, are two protein-based hormones found in high levels in bovine colostrum(4).

Since bovine colostrum is high in nutrients that combat disease and promote development, it may be able to improve immunity, treat diseases, and provide other health benefits to humans at any age.

Antibody studies

Immune milk products based on bovine colostrum have been shown in a laboratory study to possess antibodies to a range of human pathogens(3,7). That cause diseases such as: food poisoning, thrush, ulcers, some respiratory infections, periodontal disease, and more as per table below.

Bacillus cereus: Food poisoning, mastitis
Campylobacter jejuni: Food poisoning
Candida albicans: Thrush, yeast infection
Clostridium difficile: Gastro Intestinal infection.
Escherichia coli: Commensal bacteria
Escherichia coli 0157:H7: Food poisoning.
Haemophilus influenzae: Bacterial meningitis.
Helicobacter pylori: Stomach ulcers
Klebsiella pneumoniae: Pneumonia, urinary tract infection
Listeria monocytogenes: Food poisoning
Propionibacterium acnes: Acne Salmonella enteritidis.
Salmonella typhimurium: Food poisoning
Staphylococcus aureus: Pneumonia, osteomyelitis, carditis, Meningitis, arthritis, toxic shock syndrome, Antibiotic Resistant—MRSA
Staphylococcus epidermidis: Multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR), Mastitis, bacteremia, meningitis, pneumonia
Streptococcus mutans: Periodontal disease, tooth decay, Arteriosclerosis, endocarditis
Streptococcus pyogenes: Strep throat, flesh-eating bacteria, myositis, toxic shock syndrome, rheumatic fever, kidney disease
Yersinia enterocolitica: Food poisoning, septicaemia

Athletic Performance

It may be a surprise to learn that elite athletes suffer from compromised immune systems due to the high physical stresses of their exercise. Colostrum supplements may be effective in improving immunity in elite athletes, according to research(9).

One of several studies on the impact of colostrum and athletes, was a study of 29 male cyclists. Researchers found that taking 10 grams of bovine colostrum every day for 5 weeks stopped a drop in immune cells after exercise and decreased the risk of upper respiratory infection symptoms(8).

SGD Bio Colostrum is hand selected from Australian pasture raised farms and then low heat processed and Freeze Dried.

Our product has been independently tested by CSIRO to ensure that it contains superior levels of bio-active IgG antibodies.
